The lower abdomen is an area of the body that frequently accumulates excess fat in both men and women. It has been given various names such as “love handles”, “spare tire”, or “muffin top”. Typically, this area is larger than other parts of the hips and abdomen and simply looks out of proportion. This particular area of fat deposition is often resistant to weight loss and excercise. If you feel this is describing you, liposuction may be the answer.
Liposuction is the best solution for this problem for several reasons. It is safe, effective, and requires little recovery time. No large scars are required and most of my patients are back at work and excercising in a few days. Ths only restriction after this procedure is that one must wear a thin compression garment under your clothes for a month. No one else can tell you are wearing it. Liposuction is one of the most popular surgical procedures done today. When performed by a qualified Plastic Surgeon it is safe, very effective and requires little recovery time off work. Maybe you have been thinking about this, but how do you know if you are a good candidate for this procedure? Will liposuction meet your expectations and allow you to return to normal activities quickly? Is it the right procedure for you or would another option be better? The only way to know for sure is to set up a consultation in the office of a board certified Plastic Surgeon.
The ideal candidate for liposuction is a person (male or female) who is active, healthy, and near normal body weight. They may have a few areas of stubborn fat deposits that just have not gone away with diet and excercise. Liposuction alone is very effective at treating this problem. Another person who benefits from liposuction may be someone who is overweight, but not obese, and just wants certain areas to be smaller. These operations are done as an outpatient and for most people require only a few days off work.
People who may not benefit from liposuction alone are those who have excess skin in the areas to be treated. Many times this skin cannot contract enough to leave a cosmetically acceptable appearance. Some sort of “lift” or tummy tuck may be needed. This is why it is crucial that you consult with a fully trained Plastic Surgeon so that all your areas of concern can be fully evaluated and all your options explained. Today we have a variety of options available for non-surgical enhancement of facial features, wrinkle reduction, and muscle relaxants. These injectable substances are tolerated well with little discomfort and no recovery period. Many people have these procedures done on their lunch hour and go back to work immediately. there are several different products available and I choose the ones that best satisfy your needs.
Restylane is the premier wrinkle filler that has been on the market the longest and has an excellent record of success with no allergic reactions. Perlane and Juvederm are also similar substances with minor differences that may make one more suitable for your needs than another. In my practice I use all of these and discuss the best options with you during a complimentary consultation.
Botox and Dysport are muscle relaxers that are useful in areas where over-activity of the underlying muscle is causing lines and frowns. Areas where I frequently use these substances include forehad frown lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, and bands in the neck. These pocedures are quick, comfortable and require no recovery period. One may resume normal and even vigorous actiivity the very next day. These treatments may take several days to 2 weeks to have their full effect and typically last 5 to 6 months. In recent years a set of Plastic Surgery procedures has been growing in popularuty and has been termed the “mommy makeover”. This is really several procedures which can be done at the same time to restore a woman’s figure after childbirth. Even though it is called by one name, it is a customized approach and different for each person.
Typically the procedures done for the mommy makeover are tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), liposuction of hips and thighs, and a breast lift or augmentation. It can also include facial rejuvenation procedures if desired. Obviously, the best time to do this is when you are sure you are done having children.
I do these procedures as an outpatient at a certified and accredited outpatient surgery facility. I am a board certified Plastic Surgeon. It is very important that you ask your surgeon if he/she is a board certified Plastic Surgeon and for safety preasons it is almost always best to have procedures done in a surgery center as opposed to a physician’s office.
